It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of the sudden and unexpected death of our Chair of Governors; John Harding. John was greatly admired, much loved and highly respected. This has been evidenced by the numerous emails of condolence that I have received from staff, past and present, and many others in the wider schools and diocesan community.
John was a passionate supporter of all that St George’s stands for and genuinely believed in the value of a fully inclusive faith-based education. Earlier in his teaching career he was a member of staff at the school teaching several subjects equally well, leading to promotion to the position of Deputy Headteacher, before moving on to a Headship in London. In semi-retirement, John returned to the school to write the timetable and to administrate examinations. All three of John’s children enjoyed successful school years at St George’s. Not long after his retirement he was persuaded to return as a School Governor and, as it seemed to be in many areas of his life, his leadership skills were soon to come to the fore and he was asked to succeed Rev J King as Chair of the Governing Body. John was instrumental in the planning and delivery of the all-through model of education that we are now able to offer at St George’s. He will be greatly missed.
I am grateful to our Vice Chair Sheila Oag for agreeing to become interim Chair of Governors.
